Canoeing through Konnevesi National Park
The Southern Konnevesi lake, with an area of 122km2 and an average depth of 12,5m presents a widely varying landscape, from large water areas, rock formations and islands to narrow waterways and bays.
The lake is proudly home to the wild brown trout, the fish of the province of Central-Finland.
National park’s emblem and Wildlife
The emblem of the Southern-Konnevesi National Park portrays the large prey bird Osprey. This migratory bird arrives from the south as the lake melts in April. Its population in the Southern Konnevesi National Park is the densest in all of Finland where, together with their life-long mating partners, they find a nesting home in the pine treetops. The Osprey feeds on fish, they dive at a high speed into the water and grab their prey with their talons.
Cultural legacy and Scientific Research
This National Park has a big historical and cultural legacy, it belongs to Rautalampi’s ancient waterways and is home to Toussunlinna’s rare pre-historic rock paintings, located on the south-eastern shore of the National Park. The rock paintings are only accessible and visible from the water, which make for an interesting canoeing route.
The University of Jyväskylä’s Biological and Environmental Sciences Research Department is found on the shores of Konnevesi Lake. The Konnevesi Research Station, is significant in the research of experimental evolutionary and behavioural ecology of mammals, birds, invertebrates and fish
